Explore Dog River Watershed

Dog River Watershed is an urban watershed that refers to 90 square miles of land that drains into Dog River. The river and its tributaries drain most of the City of Mobile, Alabama and serve as important recreational waterways and food sources.

Dog River is greatly affected by upstream waters that flow into the river from Mobile City and County, Alabama. Dog River is approximately 7 miles long, located on the northwest side of Mobile Bay. Mobile Bay, the sixth largest watershed in the nation, flows into the Gulf of Mexico.

Sixty percent of the Dog River watershed is located within the City of Mobile. Forty percent is located in Mobile County, Alabama.

Many other named and unnamed canals and streams drain into the tributaries or Dog River. Many are simply low spots (swales) that are dry until it rains.

Sources of Water: Where does the water in Dog River come from?

Upstream
When it rains in the Dog River Watershed, rainfall meanders downhill into storm drains, low spots, creeks and streams, in search of the lowest spot. Every time it rains, all these sources contribute water to Dog River and its tributaries. Mobile, Alabama is often listed as the U.S. city with the greatest rainfall per year, around 64 inches.

Downstream: Mobile Bay
Dog River drains into Mobile Bay which drains into the Gulf of Mexico. Mobile Bay is tidally influenced so water enters Dog River through Mobile Bay as the tides change. Check the tides at need best site to link for tide info.
